Reactive vs sublimation printing: which is right for your fabric?

Reactive printing chemically bonds water-based dye into natural fibres — cotton and linen — for deep, soft, wash-fast colour. Sublimation uses heat to fuse dye into polyester for vivid, durable prints on synthetics. The right choice is decided by your fabric: natural fibre → reactive; polyester → sublimation.

What is reactive printing?

Reactive printing applies fibre-reactive dyes that form a covalent chemical bond with the cellulose molecules in natural fibres like cotton and linen. The colour becomes part of the fibre rather than a layer on top, so reactive prints stay soft to the touch and hold their colour through repeated washing — the technique behind Fabrixa’s natural-fibre range.

  1. Print reactive dye onto the natural fabric
  2. Steam-fix so the dye bonds to the fibre
  3. Wash off surplus dye
  4. Dry — a print with no added surface texture

What is sublimation printing?

Dye-sublimation uses heat (around 180–200 °C) to turn solid dye into a gas that fuses into polyester (or polymer-coated) fibres. It delivers vivid, photographic, edge-to-edge colour that won’t crack or peel — but it does not bond to untreated natural fibres such as cotton.

  1. Print the design onto transfer paper (or directly)
  2. Heat-press so the dye sublimates into the polyester
  3. Done — no wash-off stage

What each print actually looks like

How each print survives real use

  • Wash-fastness — reactive bonds survive 600+ wash cycles on cotton; sublimation locks into polyester and won’t wash out.
  • No crack or peel — neither method sits on the surface as a film (unlike DTG, DTF or vinyl), so there’s nothing to crack, flake or peel.
  • Hand-feel over time — reactive stays soft because no layer is added; sublimation keeps the poly fabric’s own hand.

Common questions

Is reactive printing better than sublimation?

Neither is universally better — it depends on the fabric. Reactive wins on natural fibres (cotton, linen); sublimation wins on polyester.

Can you sublimate onto cotton?

Not durably — sublimation needs polyester or a polymer coating. For cotton, reactive printing is the right method.

Which lasts longer in the wash?

Both are highly wash-fast on the fabric they are designed for — reactive on natural fibres, sublimation on polyester. Mismatch the method to the fabric and durability drops.

Which is more sustainable?

Reactive uses water-based dyes on natural, often GOTS-certified fibres but includes a wash-off stage; sublimation has no wash-off water stage but prints onto polyester. Fabrixa runs both on OEKO-TEX bases.

Does Fabrixa do both?
